With BetterInvesting’s free March 19 webinar with Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital, filling up fast, we thought investors might enjoy a preview of his philosophy, featured in a recent CNN story on the bull market.
And Sam says that at 5 years old, the bull market isn’t ready to totter over yet.
Of the 11 bull markets that have reared up since World War II, only three have made it through a sixth year, Sam recently told CNN. But don’t get out the shovels — it isn’t time to bury this bull.
“But Stovall thinks there’s a ‘good chance’ the current bull market will defy history and make it to its sixth birthday,” CNN reports. “That’s partly because stock valuations are still reasonable, he says. The S&P 500 is trading at 16 times 2014 earnings estimates. That’s not cheap. But it’s not overly expensive either.
“Assuming the economy continues to grow and corporate earnings increase as expected this year, Stovall believes the bull market can last another year.”
He’ll reveal some higher-yielding stocks that not only offer lower betas, but also sport track records of raising both earnings and dividends in each of the past 10 years.
And information like that should help better investors grab this still-youthful bull by the tail while it’s still with us.
