BetterInvesting chose Pittsburgh as the place to hold the 62nd Annual BetterInvesting National Convention 2013, popularly known as BINC, because it’s a hardworking, down-to-earth, serious kind of town. A place where folks can talk money while maybe watching a Penguins game. Just how serious is Pittsburgh?
A few short days after BINC, which runs from Sept. 19-22 at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel, BetterInvesting’s learned that another venerable institution will be drifting into the Steel City. A big, ginormous rubbery ducky is going to bob down the Alleghany River and flash its big rubber duck-bill orange grin at the locals.
In the 40-foot-tall water critter’s next stop after Hong Kong, “The Rubber Duck,” an art installation by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, will kick off the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s four-week-long International Festival of Firsts on Sept. 27.
This is, therefore, the oversized bath toy’s first visit to the U.S. It’s already visited Amsterdam, Lommel (Belgium), Osaka, Sydney Harbor and Sao Paulo.
Ducks and Pittsburgh apparently paddle well together. The city’s already known for its duck tours, a way to sightsee via a DUKW, a hefty amphibious truck first designed by General Motors during World War II for transporting goods and troops over land and water.
On the big, ginormous theme, if you’d like to learn how to maximize your portfolio, BetterInvesting is running a summer special on BINC, with the sale price ending on July 31. The five-day price is $435 for members; $505 for nonmembers; $260 for students; and includes meals and a choice of 70-some classes.
Our keynote speaker is Ron Muhlenkamp, CFA, the founder and president of the Wexford, Pa., based Muhlenkamp and Company, Inc., an investment management firm that also offers the Muhlenkamp Fund (ticker: MUHLX), a no-load mutual fund. He’s the author of Ron’s Road to Wealth: Insights for the Curious Investor. His speech will be “Natural Gas: An Energy Game Changer” on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9:40 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, BetterInvesting is providing this blog post as a public service announcement, so any BINC attendee who lingers in Pittsburgh and confronts Duckzilla rafting along will not panic.
But while a rubber ducky on steroids is very nice, frankly, we will not be too thrilled about said art installation unless it’s traveling with a giant bar of soap, preferably of the moisturizing variety, and a giant loofah. We might even take a dive into the Alleghany River.
