Susan Tampasis and Judy Kelsheimer, directors of BetterInvesting’s Heart of Illinois Chapter, spent two hours recently in the Chico’s store in Springfield, Ill. — and not just because they love to shop! The store manager, Trish Knipfer, had invited the chapter to give a personal finance presentation for her customers.
Two weeks earlier, Susan and Lilly Eckert, also a chapter director, were browsing through the Chico’s merchandise after an HOIC board meeting. The women were wearing their HOIC shirts and BetterInvesting name badges. The store manager asked about BetterInvesting and extended the invitation.
Susan and Judy set up a display on investment fraud with the materials provided by FINRA (the Financial Agency Regulatory Authority). They introduced themselves as BetterInvesting and HOIC volunteers working with FINRA to help people protect themselves against fraud.
“Our biggest response came when we asked the women who they thought was most susceptible to fraud,” Susan says. “All said women of our age. They were surprised to know that statistics show it was their husbands.”
Each interested Chico’s shopper went home with a bag containing BetterInvesting materials; an HOIC event calendar; from FINRA a “Tricks of the Trade: Outsmarting Investment Fraud” video and a Fighting Fraud 101 brochure; pads of paper and pens; and Susan’s and Judy’s business cards.
“We also offered our services to give presentations to their church groups, social organizations or gathering of friends,” Susan adds. “It was very nice that the employees of Chico’s as they were checking customers out reminded them to stop by our display for valuable information.”
